Understanding Weight Loss Medications

Losing weight can be a challenging journey, and for many, lifestyle changes alone may not be enough. That’s where FDA-approved weight loss medications come in. These medications, also known as anti-obesity medications (AOMs), are designed to support weight loss efforts when combined with a nutritious diet and regular physical activity.

How Do Weight Loss Medications Work?

Most weight loss drugs work by:

  • Reducing appetite – making you feel full faster.

  • Altering digestion – limiting the absorption of certain nutrients, such as fat.

  • Affecting hormones and neurotransmitters – regulating hunger and cravings.

These medications are usually prescribed for individuals with a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27+ with a weight-related health condition such as diabetes or high blood pressure.

Commonly Prescribed Weight Loss Medications

Some of the most commonly prescribed weight loss drugs include:

  • Semaglutide & Tirzepatide (GLP-1 receptor agonists) – Slow digestion, reduce appetite, and regulate blood sugar.

  • Phentermine-Topiramate – Suppresses appetite and enhances satiety.

  • Orlistat – Blocks fat absorption in the digestive system.

  • Bupropion-Naltrexone – Influences the brain’s reward system to curb cravings.

Side Effects to Consider

While these medications can be effective, they may come with side effects such as nausea, constipation, diarrhea, headaches, and dizziness. It’s essential to work closely with your healthcare provider to find the right fit for you.

The Role of Nutrition When Taking Weight Loss Medications

Weight loss medications are not a replacement for healthy eating and lifestyle changes. A personalized nutrition plan can help you maximize the benefits of these medications while ensuring your body receives essential nutrients. Key dietary strategies include:

  • Focusing on whole, nutrient-dense foods – Prioritize vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats.

  • Maintaining balanced portions – These medications reduce appetite, so it’s essential to eat meals rich in fiber and protein to stay nourished.

  • Hydration is key – Some medications may cause dehydration; drinking enough water is crucial.

  • Being mindful of fat intake with Orlistat – Since it blocks fat absorption, high-fat meals may cause digestive discomfort.
